Similar to a PBS station - this site depends on your support! Your donations are a way to share your gratitude and appreciation for all of the time and dedication that it takes to run this site, as well as the facebook and twitter pages. I have been running and maintaining the site for nearly 4 and half years now, since October 2007, free of charge, as a public service. It has basically become a full time job. I started Free in DC because I wanted to show why I love this city and what I think makes it a unique and wonderful place to live that is so much more than politics and lawyers and lobbyists. There are so many fabulous, free and low-cost things to do every single day of the year, and I wanted others to know that, and to have a chance to see another side of DC. We really are fortunate to have access to such amazing art and culture here in DC and there is not a day that goes by that I ever take that for granted. I truly do love this city - and all of the amazing free things there are to do here!

BloomScreen Indie Film Night (a weekly series of independent and foreign films - accompanied by discussions with filmmakers and other experts) presents a screening of Miss Representation (2011, 85 min), a documentary by Jennifer Siebel Newsom. See trailer.

After both screenings, there will be a discussion led by Robbie Champion of V-Day DC.

"As a lead up to their performance of The Vagina Monologues, V-Day DC presents a screening and discussion of Miss Representation - a film which examines how the mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America and challenges the media’s limiting and often disparaging portrayals of women, which make it difficult for the average girl to see herself as powerful."

V-Day DC is part of V-Day, a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sex slavery. Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues, and other workshops and performances, to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities. In 2011, over 5,800 V-Day benefit events took place produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls. V-Day DC's 2012 local beneficiary is Polaris Project DC Client Services Project.

David Newcomb will be leading a free three week meditation workshop focusing on personal happiness based on the practices of Jyoti Meditation. The first class of a three-part meditation series will focus on a brief history of meditation, followed by an explanation of the technique, and concluding with a group meditation. Part two, on Wed., Feb. 8th, 7:30 pm, will focus on lifestyle changes that interact with meditation, and review the progress from week one. Part three, on Feb. 15th, will examine the relationship between teacher and student, and again review the progress from weeks one and two.

About the workshop facilitator: David Newcomb is a long time DC resident who worked for 28 years as a contract consultant for the law firm of Holland + Knight, LLP, where he provided litigation support services, specializing in construction contract disputes, until his retirement in 2010. In addition, David is a published author, and has written three stage plays and numerous poems. His more recent work includes a collection of spiritual songs, Satsangi Symphony and he is currently working on a musical which, like his meditation practice, focuses on spreading the message of love, unity and peace through meditation and service.

This is one of the best kept secrets in the event realm in this town if you ask me. You can take an amazing vocal workshop with Ysaye Barnwell of the vocal group "Sweet Honey in the Rock" for just five bucks! No prior singing experience is required and no need to even have a super voice, just a desire to sing! She covers a great musical range of styles and forms that I couldn't possibly capture in this post, and I encourage you, and that includes men, to check it out if you can. Just watching Ysaye lead this group is worth the price of admission!

From Monday, February 13th - Friday, February 17th, DC will host its first ever Social Media Week, a week-long festival. About ninety percent of the events are free, though RSVP may be required. The festival will feature independently curated speakers, panels, workshops, events, and parties all across the district celebrating tech and social media in the Nation’s Capital. From networking events, to political panels, to keynotes at the monthly DC Tech Meetup, Social Media Week will connect people, content, and conversation around emerging trends in social and mobile media, asserting DC as a growing leader in the tech industry. RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS - Participating volunteers will be dressed in red or pink in groups at different corners passing out cards with random acts of kindness suggestions to passersby and cars, holding posters with positive and encouraging statements, helping people cross the street and carry grocery bags, giving out hugs, smiles and compliments, and other kind acts to make people happy. :)

The DC Arts Center presents the first solo show of DC artist Stephanie Williams, and "playfully invites us into bizarre and enticing organic systems." In her exploratory artistic method, she "uses strangeness to make space for creative questioning. Her works, ripe with texture and oozing sensuality, invite us into bizarre yet enticing organic systems."

Stephanie Williams is a DC based interdisciplinary artists who uses drawing, sculpture, painting and animation to create an aesthetic based in the peculiarities of the human body and the larger environment. Her work documents the gaps in her understandinig of these environments, and myths she has created to fill these voids.

You might not realize this, but during the week on Tuesday - Friday and on Thursday evenings, admission to the permanent collection is actually by donation! Just be sure to tell them that you are there for the permanent collection. If you come on the weekend, on Saturday or Sunday, and there is not a special exhibit on view, admission is $10, $8 for students and seniors. When there is a special exhibit, admission is $12 for adults and $10 for students and for visitors 62 and over.

Sri Yoga is a donation based yoga practice held at the Festival Center in Adams Morgan most Thursdays nights. It is designed to be an "ease full, peace full practice that uses full yoga asana, pranayama, and meditation." Please arrive 10 minutes early with an empty stomach. All donations benefit a charity of the teacher's choice.

The class is a slower pace than a flow class, allowing you to hold the pose longer and to move into it. Also, more meditative, and great for those getting back into their practice or new to yoga.

The exhibit showcases pieces from Liana Finck’s upcoming graphic novel based on The Jewish Daily Forward’s “Bintel Brief” advice column. Through the column, young immigrants sought advice on a variety of heartbreaking and absurd dilemmas. Finck’s illustrations capture these letters as seen from the point of view of a narrator – an omniscient but relatively helpless columnist inspired by the Forward’s founding editor, Abraham Cahan.

Liana Finck graduated from Cooper Union and received a Fulbright Fellowship to Brussels to write a graphic novel about Georges Remi, the creator of the beloved comic book character Tintin. She is a recipient of the prestigious Six Points Fellowship, a two-year grant for emerging Jewish artists.

Michael Craig-Martin: Drawings

The center piece of the Michael Craig-Martin: Drawings exhibition is a large 5 ft. x 4 ft. wall drawing created on site especially for the gallery. The show includes more than 30 drawings of subjects drawn from ordinary life, which he portrays using a mechanical line. On January 10, 2012, the artist created a large wall drawing in the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery. This video was created by William Atkins and Christopher Boyes from the Office of External Relations.

This exhibition is produced in conjunction with First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! Museums & Gardens campaign and GW's Urban Food Task Force. Pairing paintings, sculptures, and prints from GW's notable permanent collection with healthy recipes related to their subjects, this exhibit hopes to demonstrate how small changes in one's diet can make a difference.

"Mike Weber spent his childhood exploring rural farmland outside of St. Louis, Missouri. Like any inquisitive child, he was drawn to investigate the abandoned homesteads that dotted the landscape. These forgotten buildings, full of history and littered with hints of their grandiose past, left a lasting impression on the youngster. Recalling his experiences in these abandoned homes brings up mysterious childhood emotions for Weber." See pdf invite.

It was created in 2007 by Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham to help replace illegal graffiti with artistic works, to revitalize sites within the community and to teach young people the art of aerosol painting....Mural Sites have been selected in collaboration with the Department of Public Works’ (DPW) assessment of areas with high incidents of illegal graffiti. Each mural reflects the character, culture and history of the neighborhoods in the District."
