PAST: ART: "Art Crimes - Holzer & Hyatt" at The Dunes, Opens this WED, March 13th, Free

Opening Reception for “Art Crimes – Holzer & Hyatt” New works by Anson Holzer and Magida Hyatt at The Dunes in Columbia Heights
Free
Opens Wednesday, March 13th

The Dunes presents an exhibit of large scale paintings by two local artists with international influences.
10% of all art sales will be donated to Syria Relief Fund Development.

Magida Hyatt was born in Damascus, Syria, to a Palestinian family from Nazareth. She grew up in Tunisia until the age of 13 when her family moved to the United States. After graduating college, she taught French before moving with her husband, a foreign correspondent, to Bangkok, Thailand, and then to Britain where she attended the London School of Design. She later opened her own interior design business in the Washington, DC area. “My art is inspired by the natural, political and social worlds, their paradoxes and contrasts and conflicts. Both the strength and vulnerabilities of nature and humans are important to me. I look to my emotional responses to the natural world and the human condition for ideas of what to paint. My compositions are driven by form, color and texture, and are affected by my travels and exposure to many cultures.”

Composed primarily of charcoal and inks, Anson Holzer's works are designed to encourage an ambient environment. His work is often associated with the Color Field movement, Minimalist art and geometric abstraction. His palette is tightly controlled and exhibits a very precise use of color, contrasting monochromatic textural backgrounds against precise and often explosive foreground elements, which are strongly symbolic of themes that lie within mankind’s common search for spiritual knowledge and truth. Anson Holzer began his study of ink-work with calligraphy in Taipei at Wen Hwa University in 1997, completed his BA degree in the Arts at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001 and his MA in Buddhist Studies in 2012 from the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka. His large works have been shown and sold throughout the United States and abroad.

About The Dunes: The Dunes presents a series of monthly exhibitions, typically under the Art Crimes label, which is currently presented in their modern multi-use gallery space in N.W. DC. Featured artists, who are predominantly local, are chosen by curator Deidree Bennett for their extraordinary talent and investment value. Genres range from painting and photography to sculpture and mixed media.

PAST: ART: Installations by Susana Almuiña at Harmon Art Lab on 14th St, Now - FRI, March 30th, Free

Installations by Susana Almuiña
on view now at Harmon Art Lab
Free
Now - Friday, March 30th

I was at the opening for this show and took these pictures. It's great to see the works up close and in person. The mixture of yarn with nails and tree branches made the pieces feel more alive, more human to me and I liked examining each piece from different angels. Interesting stories behind each piece as well, which you can read about if you grab a print out when you walk in. The final day to view the show is Friday, March 30th.
From the invite: "Susana Almuiña's ambitious installations are a conceptual narrative. Her work resonates with the depth, sincerity, and gravitas that only an artist with her experience can bring. Social and domestic issues inspire Susana Almuiña’s work, in particular the rules and mores, and even a country’s laws, that guide family behavior and determine their destiny."

"In her harmon art lab exhibition, Susana focuses on the interesting history of her father’s family and their farm, on which seven siblings remained together to the end of their lives. Rather than disclose their secrets, Susana examines the personalities and characteristics of the aunts and uncles who stayed behind, looking at family furniture and objects in and around the house that shed, metaphorically, secrets and stories that are part of the family tradition. The result is a site-specific installation using tree roots, soil, farm implements and other items related to her exploration, as well as her own place in this fascinating timeline."

"Using beeswax from her own hives, artist Georgia Nassikas creates intriguing textures and layered surfaces in her encaustic paintings. Her intricate, abstracted landscapes acutely capture the ephemeral quality of light flickering across the land. "Elemental," a solo exhibition of her work, will be held in The Art League Gallery. Nassikas uses a combination of beeswax, mineral pigments, and oil sticks to create her encaustic paintings. Encaustic, a method reaching back to ancient times, is by definition a technique consisting of layers of wax fused together with heat."
